TRACKS & CACHES

Introduction

There are many makes of GPS units and associated mapping software. One free generic program G7 To Win is easy to download (even using a dial up connection) and install in your computer. The directions for use of this program are available at G7 To Win Instructions. G7 To Win will make it possible for you to share your GPS data with friends or club members who do not have expensive mapping software like Garmin MapSource or Magellan MapSend.

DNR Garmin, developed by the Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota, is a handy program for Garmin users that works with ESRI's ArcView 3.x, ArcMap, ArcExplorer 2 and Google Earth. It's free and easy to download.

GPS Babel can handle just about any GPS file type but requires more advanced computer skills. This program also allows the advanced user to write and incorporate their own new codes. It's also free and easy.

ArcGIS Explorer 9.2 is the latest GIS web services program from ESRI. It's free but it takes about 8 hours to download on dial up or about 10 minutes with high speed. You'll also need the supporting Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 which also requires a high speed download.

In order to make our trail tracks more user friendly, and cross platform, we have now converted to the widely accepted GPX format. The gpx format is compatible with virtually all gps units and PC and Macintosh software. This format is becoming the native storage format of a number of gps manufacturers. It is destined to persist for a considerable number of years.

Travelling between access points may require more than one GPS download to store all of the required tracks. Newer GPS units, with memory sticks, will be able to store all sections of the entire 134 km Ottawa-Temiskaming Highland Trail. Some newer GPS units can accept direct GPX track downloads from the website without using intermediate software.
